finally... insects and animals of Iguazu

a fly, outside ruins of san ignacio

scarab beetle

ant hill. Notice the red dirt.

look at them ants

little ants dragging a big dead ant back to the nest

lizard hanging out in the cracks of the walls of the ruins

termite hill. Some people freaked out, like "what the hell kind of termites live in THAT?!?" lol

ant on a tree, with a yellow butt. I´ve completely forgotten the different body parts on insects, how embarrassing! Abdomen, thank you Dr. Appelt!

This is difficult to see, but there were these little tiny yellow wasps, and their nest is in the crack in this tree.

some kind of green insect we found on a bench

a chill dog, sleeping under the bench

This was a bird on a powerline by the estancia. I didn´t get a picture of it, but it is really cool because it has TWO TAILS. Both the same length.

big caterpillar on a leaf at the mate processing factory

dead wasp/flying insect, with itty bitty ants trying to figure out how to bring it home

sorry for the blurry, but this was another caterpillar, in the national park.

a good picture of it

bullet ant hill. These are ants that have a thorax (I believe that´s the right term)  abdomen the size of a peanut (without the shell). Still pretty damn big for an ant!

pretty butterfly

Here it is: the monstrous, fantastic bullet ant! These things were ENORMOUS.

a bird. I was all excited, but there were tons of signs saying not to feed this type of bird, so I guess it´s fairly friendly and common. Still, it´s gorgeous.

this was one of those swallow-type birds that live on the cliffs by the waterfalls. Ooh, exciting.

an AWESOME mariposa (which means moth AND butterfly in Spanish)

look at that gorgeous face!

lizard. I believe it´s an iguana, if I remember correctly. Notice how the tail is a different color; obviously this guy lost his tail and had to grow it back.

stick bug!

he was really fast, I had a bunch of pictures of stick butts and stick motion blurs.

This is hard to see: I thought it was some kind of moss or lichen, then I noticed it had moved! It´s some kind of insect, disguised as something that isn´t an insect!

close up.

this was the ochentayocho butterfly, so called because it has an 88 on its wings. Although, this one has like an 80. xD

This guy just sat on this kid´s finger, drinking the sweat.

our first coati! These were basically the raccoons of the rain forest, only they were more like squirrels on U of Chicago´s campus, in that they would openly wander around and try to steal food from people or eat the scraps or garbage. There were all sorts of signs, "these are wild animals, don´t feed them, they will bite you."

not a bullet ant, but also some kind of large ant

I think that pink thing in the upper right is someone´s finger, I don´t remember.

shiny greenish-blackish ant.

another lizard

This was cool: a giant tree, with these strange little round fruit on it, and HUGE leaves. Not sure why it´s in the animals/insects file... oh well

shiny bluish-purplish beetle on the underside. It was upside down...

...so I put it right side up again. And the back is more of a greenish-yellow.

another one of those black and yellow ants.

This was at the hotel, on the steps leading to the garden. There was some sort of flying beetle, maybe a cockroach, but it had been injured and was flailing around.

This was in the forest by the Guarani village. It´s a jumping spider! It was pretty awesome.

I think there´s something in the lower right, but the light is crappy on this picture. Sorry!

another stick bug
