So this past weekend we went to Rosario, which is the biggest port city in Argentina. It´s located along the Paraná river, in the province of Santa Fe, which is about five hours outside of Buenos Aires (without traffic).
Saturday morning at a quarter to eight we met in front of the University and took a semi-cama bus with seats that leaned back (ooh, exciting!). It was a fun ride, mainly becaues everyone was asleep except for the people who showed up drunk because they had been out all night. Apparently the highlight of their night was when one of them was so drunk that he fell into the DJ booth and said "Más Britney por favor." And then the bouncer told him in English, "you need to leave now." xD Also, for the last 30 minutes one of the ISA people put on her Ipod, full of lame 80´s soft music like Total Eclipse of the Heart.
We got to Rosario and ate lunch at a buffet that was supposedly really good, but was only okay (they had good chicken fried rice. Traditional Argentinian cuisine.) After that, we checked into a hotel, and there was a slight problem since they forgot to put me in a room, but that all got sorted out. Then we went to this really trippy museum for modern art, with only about 20 pieces and fifteen of them were really gory and graphic, like pulling someone´s eyeball out and hurting themselves in weird ways. It was disconcerting.
After that, I got lost a bit, went back to the hotel and then went out with people. First we wandered around, and came to the revelation that there are NO restaurants anywhere in Rosario. On the initial map ISA gave us, there were like two smiley faces where there were restaurants, and I figured they just pointed out the good ones, but no, those were probably the ONLY restaurants in the city. We eventually found a place and ate there. Then we went to a bar (reminder that the drinking age is 18) and ordered some drinks that were incredibly rot-gut. We ordered something with vodka and orange, and something with vodka and strawberry/pineapple, and holy crap was that gross. We all took turns trying it, hoping to find someone who would drink it, with no success. Then those same people who were drunk on the ride in came by. We tried to give it to them and even THEY said they were nasty. Eventually, I was able to give the orange drink to someone, and the strawberry drink (which tasted like pepto bismal) was downed by a girl with her nose plugged and washed down with beer.
After that, we went to this awesome boliche, that I swear to god if there were adult playgrounds, this would be it. It had tables and chairs, loud music, 3 dance floors, like six flights of stairs, and outdoor garden type place, and this really cool roped off area with this network of circular booth tables in little pods, surrounded by neon red stuff. I can´t even describe it. We met up with practically everyone in our program who went, but by about 3:30 it got uncomfortably crowded, so a girl and I left.
On Sunday, we went to an artificial beach on the river. It was so fun, and fake beaches are better than the beaches in Florida because you don´t have to worry about stepping on sharp shells or anything. I got terribly sunburned, and not evenly. I have racing stripes wrapping from my armpits up to the inside of my elbows.
We headed home at about 3:30, and got home at about 9 due to horrible traffic going in to Buenos Aires, then after that we went home... in the swim suits and short shorts from the beach. Thankfully I had a sweatshirt, but still.
So that was my wonderful time in Rosario. I didn´t get to go to the famous monumento because I got lost, but still a successful and relaxing weekend. I still prefer Buenos Aires, though.
